About Us

Our Purpose
HSMS SHELTERS nearly 1200 animals each year. The Shelter feeds them, keeps them in a healthy, safe environment, sees to their medical needs, finds their rightful owners, or puts them up for adoption. HSMS has an enviable placement rate of 70% to 75% over the past three years.

But there is a dark side. There are hundreds of animals (millions nationwide) who will never know a home despite our efforts and those of humane societies across the country.

Roughly 25% of the dogs and cats
we shelter never find a new home.

Why should these animals, who only wanted a home and a loving family, be subjected to being dumped off, or "lost", and having to fend for themselves for any length of time? There is an answer to the awesome problem of pet overpopulation - it's called spaying and neutering.

HSMS TRIES TO HELP COMBAT the pet overpopulation problem. Persons adopting pets from the Shelter pay $60.00 per animal. This fee covers the cost of altering the animal, the first set of vaccinations and deworming. An additional $10.00 is charged if a rabies shot is administered while in our care and/or another $10.00 is charged if a heartworm test (for dogs) or a feline leukemia test (for cats) is given. (Since 1996, under Georgia law, all shelter animals must be sterilized.)

HSMS MAINTAINS a lost and found service. Owners of missing pets can call the Shelter and report their loss and review the "found" list with Shelter personnel.

HSMS, hopefully in the near future, will be visiting nursing homes, providing pet therapy to many shut-ins in the Towns/Union County area and educating the local school children about the importance of spaying/neutering your pets.

HSMS WORKS for the day when all dogs and cats born will have responsible caretakers who will provide for their needs for life.
